AFTER THOUGHTS
This encounter has been presented as fact. Let the reader decide. The encounter can not be verified. The messenger preferred to be uninvolved. Judge the message from your own perspective. Then ask yourself the question that Bill has asked himself many times. Where are the thinkers, the doers, and the people who will go down in history as the most influential thinkers who have ever lived? The end of our civilization as we know it may be closer than we realize. Come forth you thinkers and create the energy society.
The Visitor from the future has left, possibly never to return. Bill McLean was now alone, as alone as anyone could be. The curiosity and questions over a lifetime suddenly and unexpectedly came to an end. The emotional reaction was both satisfying and unsettling. The consequences were so conclusive and beyond control that it was this that presented the most important question of all. The world’s industrial societies are about to experience a paradigm shift. Not only do existing theories change, but also our understanding of the world changes as well.
Bill had asked the visitor what he should do with this knowledge. How should he present this inevitable social change to the world’s societies? The answer was “Nothing”. If there were any possibility that Bill would be believed that the encounter had taken place, then the encounter never would have taken place. Just an exercise! Just an exercise! Just a cruel exercise?
The good news was that the unanswerable questions finally had answers, but Bill’s underlining anxiety continued.
Nature does not recognize cruelty, only change and the law of evolution. Bill continued to deliberate. The principle of “Chaos” is that systems move toward a condition of disorder, but “Anti-chaos” has disorder moving toward a condition of order. Life follows death with the law of evolution controlling the degree of change. Why must society become extinct? The dinosaurs had no control over their extinction but humans have science and science enables us to control nature. An energy society conforms to nature. Only humans use money; nature uses energy. The conversion is so logical and should therefore be simple to understand.
Bill had recently read a book “How The Scots Created The Modern World’” From the northern part of a small island, a small society influenced tremendous change throughout the world. It was the Scots who invented and developed major changes in government, economics, religion, science, medicine, technology, engineering, industry, and law. The Scots also opened up the frontiers of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa.
Bill McLean is a descendent of these historical Scots. Why shouldn’t he contribute in some way to evolutionary change? Why shouldn’t Vancouver Islanders duplicate the Scottish Islanders and continue that legacy. Why shouldn’t we influence the creation of the new ‘Modern World’?
Bill proposed the title ‘The BC Islanders’. He liked the title because it rhymed with "The Scottish Hylanders".
